The origins of ventilated façades can be traced back to traditional construction methods in regions where moisture, rainfall, and temperature variations presented significant challenges. Long before modern engineering defined the principles of façade ventilation, builders were already using layered wall systems and air cavities to improve building performance.
The Origins of the Concept: Learning from Traditional Architecture
The fundamental idea behind a ventilated façade is based on a simple principle: separating the exterior protective layer from the structural wall creates a space where air can circulate and moisture can escape.
Traditional architecture in both Nordic and Mediterranean regions developed similar approaches independently, responding to different climatic conditions.
In northern Europe, where heavy rainfall and high humidity affected timber structures, builders introduced double-layer wooden walls to protect buildings from moisture. The outer layer acted as a protective barrier against weather, while the air space between the two layers allowed ventilation and helped keep the inner structure dry.
In Mediterranean regions, where buildings faced intense solar radiation and seasonal temperature changes, architects developed wall systems with cavities designed to improve thermal behaviour and reduce moisture-related problems.
Although these early solutions were not ventilated façades in the modern technical sense, they introduced the essential concepts that continue to define them today: separation of layers, air movement, and improved environmental protection.
Nordic Construction and the First Ventilated Principles
One of the earliest examples of a cavity-based wall system developed in Scandinavia.
Norwegian farmers discovered that storing crops in buildings affected by moisture often resulted in significant losses. To solve this problem, they began constructing barns with double wooden walls. The external wall protected the building from rain and wind, while openings between the boards allowed air circulation within the cavity.
This passive ventilation system helped remove moisture and maintain a drier internal environment.
The Development of the Cavity Wall in England
A major step toward modern façade technology occurred in England with the development of the cavity wall system in the early twentieth century.
Introduced widely during the 1920s, cavity walls consisted of two separate masonry layers with an air gap between them. The outer wall acted as protection against driving rain, while the cavity reduced the risk of moisture reaching the interior structure.
Metal ties were used to connect the two layers while maintaining separation between them.
Although the cavity wall was not identical to today’s ventilated façades, it represented an important evolution in building envelope design. It demonstrated that separating protective and structural functions could significantly improve a building’s resistance to environmental conditions.
Another important predecessor of the ventilated façade emerged in Mediterranean architecture, particularly in Spain.
The so-called rainwater partition wall was developed to address moisture problems, especially in buildings with shared walls. The system incorporated an air cavity that allowed water to drain away while improving insulation performance.
These constructions introduced a passive approach to moisture control and demonstrated how air spaces could contribute to healthier and more durable buildings.
Today, this type of construction is considered one of the historical foundations of modern ventilated façade systems because it combined insulation principles with natural ventilation.
